From Food to Pharma: A World of Products Suited for Flow Wrapping

In this blog, the Record Packaging Solutions team are breaking down the benefits of flow wrapping as a packaging technique. Able to create a wide variety of different shapes and utilities, a flow wrapping machine can be an excellent investment for your business. Read on to find out more!

What is Flow Wrapping?

Flow wrapping is an efficient and versatile packaging method that uses a roll of flexible film or paper. A vertical or horizontal flow wrapping machine seals the film around the product and then cuts away the excess film to reveal the perfectly wrapped item. Flow wrapping machines are versatile and typically modular, making them relatively easy to maintain and suitable for a huge range of applications.

Pillow Bags

Offering an air-tight seal and ultimate convenience, the pillow bag is the most commonly used pouch shape across the entire packaging industry. Suitable for solid products, pillow bags are commonly seen across supermarket shelves and in pharmacies. With a buffer of air around the product, pillow bags also provide some cushioning during transit.

Pillow bags can also be designed with gusseting, which is ideal for accommodating bulkier or more irregular items. This increases the capacity of the gusseted pillow bag without compromising on stability or losing excessive space for branding and marketing across the package.

MAP Packaging

MAP, or Modified Atmosphere Packaging, extends the life of perishable items by changing the atmosphere inside the package before it is sealed. Flow wrapping machines can create MAP containers for items across the food, pharmaceutical, and consumer goods industries — they are particularly useful for items with an extremely short shelf life, like pre-made salads or raw meat.
