Vertical Form Fill Seal (VFFS) Machines

Vertical Form Fill Seal (VFFS) machines are a high-speed, automated solution for packing a vast range of “free-flowing” products, including granules, powders, liquids, and snacks.

Unlike horizontal wrappers, a VFFS machine operates vertically. It forms a continuous tube from a reel of film, fills the tube with product dropped from a weigher or doser above, and then seals and cuts the bag in one seamless motion.

This “form, fill, seal” process is extremely efficient and uses gravity to its advantage, making it the essential packaging technology for high-volume industries like food, snacks, pharmaceuticals, and hardware.

Trusted by leading brands

Polyethylene Sealing VFFS machines are a specialised category of vertical wrappers engineered specifically to run and seal polyethylene (PE) films. Standard PE is a mono-material that is famously difficult to work with, as it melts and deforms easily under heat, readily sticking to standard sealing jaws.

These machines overcome this challenge by using a non-standard sealing system. Instead of constant-heat bars, they typically use impulse sealing (where a wire rapidly heats and cools) or specially coated “Teflon” jaws with hot air or radiant sealing. This allows them to create a strong, clean seal on the PE film without melting or sticking.

This technology is the essential solution for industries like frozen food, aggregates, soil, and pet food, and for any company wanting to move to recyclable, “store drop-off” (LDPE #4) mono-material films.

Intermittent Vertical Form Fill Seal (VFFS) machines are the versatile workhorses of the packaging industry. These machines operate on a “stop-start” cycle: the film is pulled down to a set length, stops, and is then sealed by the horizontal jaws while the product is dispensed.

This operating principle makes them exceptionally flexible and reliable. They are the ideal choice for a vast range of applications, particularly those involving auger fillers (for powders), volumetric fillers, or liquid dosers, where the product is best filled into a stationary bag.

They offer a perfect balance of performance, cost-effectiveness, and simplicity, making them a popular solution for small, medium, and large-scale production lines across all industries.

A High-Speed Box Motion VFFS machine is an advanced vertical packaging solution that combines high throughput with exceptional seal quality. It is designed for applications where a strong, hermetic seal is just as important as production speed.

Unlike standard intermittent machines that must stop the film to seal, this continuous-motion system uses a “box motion” sealing head. The horizontal sealing jaws move both vertically and horizontally, travelling with the film for an extended period (a “long dwell”) before opening and returning.

This action creates a high-integrity, airtight seal while the film is still moving, enabling high-speed production. It is the definitive solution for packing fresh produce, frozen foods, coffee, and powders that require Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) or use thick, challenging film materials.

Why choose Vertical Form Fill Seal (VFFS) machines

A VFFS machine is the most efficient and cost-effective solution for packing non-solid items. Its vertical operation, powered by gravity, is a fundamentally smart design.

  • Perfect for Loose & Free-Flowing Products This is the primary advantage. The vertical design uses gravity to fill the bag, making it the ideal solution for products that cannot be pushed on a belt. It’s perfectly suited for crisps, cereals, coffee, powders, liquids, and fresh-cut salad, integrating seamlessly with multi-head weighers, auger fillers, or liquid dosers.
  • Efficient Factory Footprint By operating vertically, VFFS machines take up significantly less floor space than a sprawling horizontal flow wrapper. This “vertical-up” design allows you to maximise your production capacity within a limited area.
  • High-Speed, Low-Cost Production These machines are built for speed and reliability, capable of producing a high volume of finished packs per minute. The “pillow bag” is one of the most economical and versatile pack styles available, offering low material costs and high overall efficiency.

Key Features of Vertical Form Fill Seal (VFFS) machines

Forming Collar and Tube

This is the heart of the machine. The flat film is pulled over a precisely engineered "forming shoulder" (collar) and down a "forming tube" to create the continuous bag shape. Different sets allow for a wide range of bag widths.

Integration with Dosing Systems

VFFS machines are designed to work as part of a complete system, integrating directly with upstream fillers like Multi-Head Weighers (for snacks/granules), Auger Fillers (for powders), or Liquid Pumps (for sauces/soups).

Horizontal & Vertical Sealing Jaws

The machine features a heated vertical seal bar to create the "fin seal" on the back of the bag, and a powerful horizontal jaw set that creates the top and bottom seals, simultaneously cutting the finished bag free.

Servo-Driven Film Pull Belts

High-grip belts (or vacuum belts), powered by servo motors, pull the film through the machine with extreme precision. This ensures accurate bag lengths, correct print registration, and smooth operation at high speeds.

Print Registration Sensor

A photocell that reads an "eye mark" on pre-printed film. This feature ensures that the film is stopped and cut in the correct place every time, so your branding and artwork are perfectly centred on the finished pack.
