5 Simple Tips for Reducing Packaging Waste at Home

Sustainability

Sustainability is a buzz-word in many different industries, with brands looking to protect the planet and demonstrate to their customers that they are committed to the environment. At Record Packaging, we are passionate about reducing packaging waste, but also about the individual choices that we can make to support our ecofriendly mission.

In this blog, we are highlighting our top tips for reducing packaging waste at home by empowering your customers to make more sustainable choices.

  1. Mono-Material Packaging Films

Traditional packaging film is laminated in multiple layers of different materials, which makes it extremely difficult to recycle. There has now been a considerable shift in the packaging industry towards mono-material films, made of a single material. These flexible packaging types are much easier to recycle, and also cost less to produce, as the process of creating them is far simpler and more streamlined. Mono-material films generally have a lower carbon footprint than multi-layer films, allowing your business to create recyclable flow wrap packaging with a sustainable focus.

  1. Film Reduction

At Record Packaging, we support our clients in avoiding waste by advocating for reduced film use in their designs, thus reducing packaging waste. We can facilitate this environmentally-friendly change in a variety of relatively simple ways, such as reducing the width and crimps of a package, whilst still emphasising marketing and presentation.

  1. Change Packaging Machine Designs to Reduce Material Waste

Consumers often look for brands that avoid excess packaging, ensuring that less material ends up in landfill sites or causing environmental pollution. No matter the machinery you purchase from us, the Record Packaging team can help you to calibrate it to create packaging that minimises waste materials, including eco-friendly flow wrapped products.

  1. Choose Bio-Based Materials

Selecting materials that biodegrade ensures that your product is not contributing to landfill and instead will break down once discarded. There are PLA-, paper- and fibre-based film options available, including an option to create PE laminate with a plant-based coating made from sugar cane.

  1. Use MAP Packaging

MAP, or Modified Atmosphere Packaging, involves filling a sealed product container with gases that control microbe growth instead of using room air. MAP creates sustainable sachet packaged goods because it extends shelf life to avoid food waste, reduces the need for refrigeration and energy consumption, and helps to limit the need for preservatives that can cause environmental damage.
