High-Speed Bread and Roll Packaging: Choosing Between Rotary and Box Motion

Hello, I am Andrew Murphy, Technical Director at Record Packaging Systems Ltd. Following my formal engineering training and years of hands-on commissioning of heavy-duty packaging systems across the UK, I have led our technical department through some of our most complex machinery integrations. When setting up a high-volume bakery line, one of the first technical decisions I review with an operations team is the choice of sealing jaw action. This mechanical detail is what dictates your overall throughput and the quality of your finished product.

Rotary Sealing for Fast-Moving Bakery Lines

When you are packaging standard, high-volume items like morning rolls, baps, or sliced loaves, throughput is your main performance indicator. For these applications, rotary motion flow wrappers are the industry standard. On systems like our Record Superb Rotary machine, the sealing jaws spin continuously on a fixed axis, sealing and cutting the film in one quick, fluid motion without halting the product stream.

This mechanical simplicity allows bakeries to achieve exceptional speeds, often exceeding 100 packs per minute depending on the product dimensions. Because bread is relatively uniform, a fast rotary seal provides the ideal balance of speed and operational efficiency.

Box Motion for Heavy or Gusseted Bags

However, the physical requirements change when handling larger multi-packs of rolls or heavy, crusty artisanal loaves. These products often require thicker barrier films or gusseted packaging to keep them fresh.

In these instances, a standard rotary jaw does not spend enough time in contact with the plastic to transfer the heat required for a secure bond. A box motion flow wrapper solves this problem. The sealing jaws move on a reciprocating track, travelling horizontally alongside the product to apply consistent heat and pressure over a longer duration.

“In my engineering experience, matching the sealing jaw motion to the physical behaviour of the bakery film is the single most important factor in preventing line jams and ensuring consistent pack quality.” – Andrew Murphy

Selecting the Right Setup for Your Bakery

For most standard bread lines, rotary motion is the ideal choice due to its high speed and low maintenance requirements. But if you are wrapping heavier products or using thicker laminates, investing in a box motion configuration is essential to protect your product shelf life.

At Record Packaging, we customise every machine to fit your specific crumb structure and packaging film.
