When you look at a product on a shelf, its packaging tells a story. While consumers might only see the final bag or wrapper, manufacturers know there’s a crucial decision behind it: whether to use a horizontal or vertical packaging machine. These two technologies, known as HFFS and VFFS, are fundamentally different and are chosen based on the product’s characteristics. Knowing which one is right for your operation is essential for efficiency and product quality.
Horizontal Form Fill and Seal (HFFS)
Horizontal machines, commonly known as flow wrappers, form a continuous tube of film around a product as it moves horizontally along a conveyor. The product is fed into the machine, which then creates seals on the top, bottom, and back of the pack.
- How They Work: Products are conveyed on a horizontal plane, and the machine wraps a single piece of film around them. This is the process we see with single-serve items.
- Best For: Products that are solid, stable, and can be handled individually. This includes bakery goods (muffins, croissants), confectionery (chocolate bars, sweets), and non-food items like soap bars and medical devices.
- Our Machines: The Record Jaguar and Record Panda are perfect examples of HFFS flow wrappers, engineered for high-speed wrapping of a wide variety of individual items.
Vertical Form Fill and Seal (VFFS)
Vertical machines operate by a completely different principle. The film is formed into a tube and sealed vertically, and then the product is dropped into the newly formed bag from above.
- How They Work: A flat roll of film is formed into a tube using a collar. The bottom of the bag is sealed, and a multi-head weigher or volumetric filler drops a pre-measured quantity of product into the tube. The top of the bag is then sealed, and it is cut free from the next bag.
- Best For: Products that are loose, granular, or multi-item. This technology is ideal for items that cannot be easily conveyed horizontally.
- Our Machines: In partnership with leading manufacturers, our VFFS machines are used for a huge range of products, including snack foods (crisps, nuts, pretzels), sweets (lollies, small chocolates), powders (coffee, flour), and even frozen foods and liquids.
The Key Differences
The choice between HFFS and VFFS hinges on the state of your product. If your product is a single, solid item that can be conveyed on its own, an HFFS machine is the go-to solution. If your product is loose, needs to be weighed or counted, or is liquid, a VFFS machine is the answer. VFFS machines also tend to be more efficient in terms of floor space, as they operate vertically.
“The core of our business is helping customers find the right machine for their unique challenge. Whether you need the high-speed precision of a horizontal flow wrapper or the versatility of a vertical bagger for your loose products, understanding the fundamental difference between these two technologies is the first step towards a more efficient and profitable operation.”
