In our dedicated testing facility in Manchester, my engineering team and I regularly run trial configurations for clients with challenging products. I have spent years testing how different films react to sticky ingredients, crumbly textures, and delicate toppings. When a bakery product is too fragile or sticky to be pushed along a standard packaging line, we configure our machinery with an inverted film feed.
Why the Inverted Design is Better for Delicate Goods
On an inverted flow wrapper, the film roll is mounted underneath the machine instead of above it. This reversed layout changes the physics of how the product is carried through the wrapping process.
Instead of pushing a sticky iced bun or a fragile, crumbly pastry along a stainless steel feed plate where it can catch and deform, the product is placed directly onto the moving film. The film itself acts as the conveyor belt, gently carrying the delicate item forward through the folding box and into the sealing jaws. This approach eliminates friction and prevents damage to toppings or delicate structures.
“Testing delicate products in our facility has proven that feeding film from the bottom of the machine is the most effective way to eliminate friction and prevent product damage entirely.” – Andrew Murphy
Perfect for Trayless Packaging and Eco-Friendly Initiatives
Inverted flow wrappers are widely used in the bakery sector for wrapping items like trayless multi-packs of cookies, soft flapjacks, and gluten-free products. By wrapping these items securely without a rigid plastic tray, bakeries can significantly reduce their plastic usage, helping them meet modern environmental targets and lower their overall packaging costs.
Additionally, our inverted systems can be easily fitted with MAP gas-flushing systems to ensure that even your most delicate products benefit from an extended shelf life.
Our engineering team has installed many custom inverted wrapping setups across the UK food industry. You can review the performance gains and operational benefits our clients have achieved by browsing the real-world projects on our case studies page at https://recordpackaging.com/case-studies/.
