The Record Packaging Solutions team can often be found talking about flow wrap machines, flowpack solutions, and the benefits of HFFS — but what about alternative methods for packaging your products? In this blog, we have created a series of short fact files on various methods of packaging, helping you to compare your options at a glance.
Flow Wrapping
Flow wrapping machines, otherwise known as horizontal flow wrappers or horizontal form-fill-seal (HFFS), create packaging around each product using a single roll of film. The machine uses heat and pressure to seal the film around the products and then cuts out each individual piece to ensure consistent packaging sizes.
Advantages:
- Very fast and cost-effective
- Machines can be easily upgraded due to modular design
- Minimal waste
Disadvantages:
- Difficult to flow-wrap products that have irregular shapes or are particularly heavy
Thermoforming
Using heat to make the plastic malleable, a thermoforming machine will then mould it into a specific form and then cool the material to solidify it into the desired shape.
Advantages:
- Ability to create sharp, detailed designs
- Fast turnaround
- Precision and repeatability
Disadvantages:
- Only suitable for thin-walled designs
- Can be more costly than other methods
Shrink Wrapping
Applying heat to shrink specially-made plastic film, shrink wrapping machines can be used to create a tight seal around a product.
Advantages:
- Creates a tamper-proof seal
- Extends shelf life of perishable products
- Three types of machinery available — manual, semi-automatic, and fully automatic.
Disadvantages:
- Unsuitable for products with sharp edges
- Does not provide as much protection for delicate products as some other methods
Skin Packaging
Like shrink wrapping, skin packaging clings close to a product. It is created by pulling the film into place with a vacuum and then securing it onto rigid backing.
Advantages:
- No leakage
- Extended shelf life and attractive presentation
- Convenient for consumers
Disadvantages:
- Can be more costly to produce and requires more equipment (bulk production can offset this!)
